West Midlands Police are preparing for one of their largest security operations.
The Conservative party Conference 2018, runs from 30th September to 8th October at the ICC in Birmingham.
The event will see the involvement of hundreds of officers from across the force to ensure a safe conference for over 11,000 people.
Police will also ensure the security for delegates, VIPs and other visitors, as well as facilitating the people's right to peaceful protest.
In preparation, West Midlands Police has been working closely with local businesses and traders, Birmingham City Council, the ICC, the Hyatt and the Conservative party to ensure a safe and secure conference.
Chief Supt Dave Sturman, one of the commanders for the conference, said: “The world’s media will be focused on Birmingham throughout. It’s a monumental challenge with the UK Government moving to Birmingham, and 11,000 delegates and countless other visitors descending on our city.
“But with those challenges come the chance for West Midlands Police to shine. We’re working with partners around the city to deliver a safe conference for all.
“So what will it mean for you? If you’re travelling into the city centre at the end of September and beginning of October, you’ll need to think about restrictions on travel around the conference site.
“There’ll likely be protests and counter-protests and it’s our job to make sure they pass off peacefully.
“You’ll see lots of extra officers in the city, some armed and some unarmed. They’ll be happy to help if you’ve got any questions or concerns. If you see anything that looks odd or out of place, let us know and we’ll handle it.
“This year’s got some unique challenges, as Birmingham’s city scape continues to evolve. But we’ve got a great track record in delivering a safe and secure Conservative Party Conference, going right back to 2008 and this year will be no different."
Key updates will be shared via the @brumpolice Twitter account. More information about the current road closures and diversions in the city centre is available at https://www.birmingham.gov.uk/paradise.
